Lake Forest is located on the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base. The history of this remarkable area spans over 400 years and is closely tied to the regional history of Eastern New York State. As a military installation, Plattsburgh was involved with major campaigns, battles, and wars, including the war of 1812, the Seminole Wars, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Spanish American War, the Philippine Insurrection, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Gulf War.

The base has been closed since 1995. Many of its stately brick homes and buildings are located on the National historic register. The community is excited about recent discoveries of long lost treasurers surfacing from the depths of Lake Champlain. The anchor from the battleship Confiance was discovered in 1998 and is now located in City Hall. Other trade and war vessels are being restored and will be located in an historic museum on the former base.

Lake Forest is incorporated as a not-for-profit senior living community under the direction of a local board of directors. Our mission is to enhance the lifestyles of people 62 years of age and older by providing the highest possible quality of life through the design and stewardship of moderately priced living facilities, services, and programs.
